The Perfect Blend of Light and Dark in a Victorian House

Another stunning house from the books of Light Locations. This Victorian house with a large back extension really is the perfect blend of light and dark and the perfect blank canvas to display the wealth of period features and recent renovations alike.

Not just a location house. This home is a perfect example of the way we all aspire to live today. With lots of light and easy access to the outside space, this extension into the garden and the side-return provides a large kitchen, dining space and sitting area. Somewhere for the whole family to spend quality time whatever the season and not get under each others feet.

Keeping true to the period of the house, the kitchen has successfully combined shaker-style cabinets, metro tiles and double butler sink with a huge marble topped island unit. To keep it looking homely glass-fronted cabinets and open shelves provide an opportunity to display favourite items, and copper pendant lights over the island are the icing on the cake.

The panelled wall in the dining area adds interest to what could be a bland corner and by installing it horizontally it looks modern too. But what light does that sky-light window provide? Fabulous! This corner would no doubt be bright and cheerful even on the dullest winters day.

And as with many Victorian home that have been extended at the back there is always a middle room that has lost its natural light. And as shown here its the perfect excuse to embrace that darkness, paint it in a darker shade and create a cosy space for a library or snug.

And then into the light again.

I fully approve of the features in this room. The deep skirting boards and plantation shutters on the window keep the period feel but the wood-burner, furniture and colours are bang-up-to-date. Perfect.

This little work-station in the kitchen is perfect too. Handy sockets make it very practical but when the laptop is put away it’s just a lovely looking piece of furniture for displaying some flowers.

The handsome hallway leading down into the kitchen extension is also light and airy. No heavy Victorian staircase here, just an airy, sweeping version, tiles, panelling and a neutral stair runner.
