How to Rock an Industrial Style Kitchen – In a Chic Way

So you’ve decided you like some aspects of an industrial style kitchen but don’t want to go down the rustic route? I’m totally on the same page. Especially in the kitchen. We’ve spent too many years perfecting the clinically clean aesthetic to start reverting back to brick dust in the casserole. Or fluff behind the reclaimed, free-standing cabinets. Or even fallen food between the floorboards. Well, you can have your cake and eat it. Amen to that.

Fred Horlock, the kitchen designer at Neptune quite rightly says “Industrial design isn’t all about rustic reclaimed woods and wrought metal. Neither is a style that can only be appreciated in city lofts or raw-looking conversions. This design movement is a trend that has evolved and matured into something that could even be described as elegant”. 

And he has a few pointers to share that might help to create a kitchen as stunning as the one on this page.

Tips on Creating an Industrial Style Kitchen – In a Chic Way

• Strip back the plaster to reveal raw elements such as concrete walls or floors and exposed copper pipes.
• Instead of traditional wall cabinets, why not get creative and upturn Crittal-style steel side tables and use them as shelving instead. (See Neptune’s new Carter collection).

• Take matching coffee tables and stack them to form an unusual kitchen island.
• If you’re up for a bit of extra work, change your work surface to a matte black finish (much easier to maintain than polished black). From there you can choose a statement tap in coordinating black or copper.

• Develop the look by using old copper pipes as utensils or herb rails and for lighting.
• Go for Edison-style filament bulbs on long flexes for an industrial feel.

This is the Henley kitchen from Neptune (from £13,000) with custom cup handles, black ceramic sink and Black Peppercorn granite worktop. The Carter large coffee table (two are used as the kitchen island) is £900 and the Carter large side tables (used as the shelving) are £340 each. 

I’d also like to add that accessories can either make or break this look. So many hard surfaces need texture to soften things up a little. And to keep the look authentic there’s no place for plastic or brightly coloured utensils.

Tips on Accessorising an Industrial Style Kitchen – In a Chic Way

• Baskets will add some much needed texture. Use them as extra storage. This is practical too when you are using open-shelving.
• Keep china and ovenware white to keep the look modern and contemporary.
• Store dry goods in glass jars and canisters. You can easily see what’s in each jar without the need of labels.
• Use wooden chopping boards instead of plastic or glass. They have natural anti-bacterial qualities and look good too.

Add some greenery. A window-ledge filled with herbs or a few bowls with vegetables close to hand are also practical and decorative touches.
