Bedside Tables – To Match or Not to Match?

25 Beautiful Bedside Tables and how to pair them up

According to our new online bible (aka Pinterest) one of the most searched topics in 2016 was Bedside Tables. Who knew? That piece of furniture that most of us have, or have a need for, is trending. So of course, I’d be remiss not to give a few pointers to anyone looking to buy or replace this humble item of furniture in their own homes.

Bedside Tables – The Practicalities

It’s always good to start with the basics. Exactly how much room you have for your nightstand (bedside table over the pond) will determine the size of bedside table you end up choosing. Natch. But consider also, exactly how you will use it. Do you need extra storage in the bedroom? If so, it makes sense to choose a style with drawers. How much surface area do you actually need for all your bedtime essentials? Only you can answer this, but I will suggest a round bedside table will actually hold far less than a square one. I know this only too well by experience as I’m always knocking things off the edge of my lovely round tables.

Bedside Tables – What Style?

Again, this is down to your own personal preferences and the rest of the furniture in the room. A country style bedroom can have a modern white glossy bedside table, but it’s always hard to pull off this kind of eclectic styling. Best to stick to what you know. So, if you do have a country style bedroom, or a mid-century style bedroom, or a even an industrial style bedroom, choose something that will fit in with it.

Bedside Tables – To Match or Not to Match?

Now, I’m not going to tell you to buy two entirely different bedside tables. Of course not. But why buy two identical pieces of furniture when there is so much choice out there? Now this is where I confess that my bedside tables do in fact match. But I wish they didn’t. So do as I say, not as I do. A room looks so much more interesting with different pieces of furniture in it. It looks more curated and less like you went to a furniture store at sale time. Isn’t that what we all want? Rooms in our homes that look like they evolved from old and new, inherited and re-purposed. All put together with a stylists flair. It’s not hard trust me.

Bedside Tables – To Match or Not to Match – The Rules

So, now you’ve listened to me and you’ve decided to buy mis-matched bedside tables, there are a few rules to observe. Choose two items that have at least something in common. The same wood. The same style. A colour in common. A shape in common. Stick to this rule and you can even have two pieces of furniture of different sizes. With drawers and without. Round and square even. After all, him in the house needs less storage than you. And there you go. And just to help you out a little I’ve put together a few examples. You’re welcome.
