Living the Dream in White, Light, Period House Splendour

Living the Dream in White, Light, Period Splendour

Do you ever look in magazines and drool over the rooms that the stylist has dressed? Never mind the ridiculously expensive furniture and accessories artfully displayed. Instead, just look at the height of those ceilings. Look at those period details. The stripped wooden floors. The sweeping staircase. Those impossibly beautiful windows! No? Is it just me then?

Crittall windows flood the space with light

Well, you might not know it but there is a whole plethora of location houses available for TV and photoshoots. From city apartments, to country houses, to almost derelict warehouses. But I always zoom in on the period house. The ones with a wealth of interesting details, just waiting for those clever stylists to work their magic.

And the ones with just enough styling already to fire the imagination.

wood burner, crittall windows, plants = very shabby chic

Like this beautiful house in Kensal Rise, London. That back extension with the Crittall windows flooding the white space with light is to die for. Perfect already with a mixture of glossy white floorboards, shabby chic (not my style normally but absolutely perfect here) furniture, mis-matched chairs, pops of recurring blue, and some trailing plants. Can’t you just imagine pottering around in this space on a sunny day?

Arranging and re-arranging the flowers.

And lounging on the sofa, while the light streams in. I know I can.

workspace with a mixture of old and new

And I could certainly work in this space.

Fabulous period details above a door - a peak into a shabby chic bedroom

The owner has cleverly accessorised it with a mixture of old, new, salvaged, reclaimed, handmade and upcycled. There’s no theme. No period observed. Seemingly no rhyme or reason. But it works.

Panelling is a great shelf for a mixture of art

So, there’s a lesson for us all.
