The Hayarden School for Refugee Children in Tel Aviv by Steinberg Fisher

The Hayarden School for Refugee Children in Tel Aviv by Steinberg Fisher

With hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing from mostly Africa to Israel over the last decade, the educational system didn’t have the resources to support the families and their children. To aid them, a 1960s elementary school in Tel Aviv was renovated by Ayelet Fisher and architect Chen Steinberg Navon of Steinberg Fisher. The Hayarden School’s public spaces were reimagined to become a modern learning environment that was inviting and comfortable for the children.

The designers didn’t just renovate the school – they wanted to give the children a place to feel secure and like they belonged so they incorporated a house-shaped theme throughout. Bright, invigorating colors bring various areas to life and spark creativity.

Semi-private spots were designed to allow children quiet places to do their work.
