Moodboards are not just for starting decorating schemes from scratch. I often collate a moodboard when I want to know if existing furniture and accessories will go with new purchases. Let’s face it, we can’t start from scratch every time we want to repaint a room and give it a fresh new look. If only we could. Those of us who have been home owners for quite some time will already have amassed a lot of stuff we still love, and we all have budget constraints that mean we have to carefully consider buying new. It’s not good for the planet either. We should if possible work around what we already have.

So here’s where I am with planning the hall and stairs scheme at home. I live in a townhouse with two flights of stairs and impossibly high ceilings on the top flight. A daunting task considering the BF does all of our decorating. I’ve also been indecisive about what I really want to do with the space. It’s only going to be done once so I really do want to get it right. So while I’m writing this, he’s up a scaffolding tower dealing with all the cracks that new-builds develop out of nowhere. Rather him than me. I’ll help once the painting starts I promise.
On the board are things that we have, things I have bought, and ideas for things to buy.

- This wallpaper from Woodchip and Magnolia really was the inspiration I needed to pull it all together. I’d already been toying with the idea of using teal paint but I wanted to give the walls some oomph. There’s a lot of wall. So, the wallpaper is going on the end walls (the walls facing you as you go up and down the stairs) and the rest of the walls will be painted.
- I bought black lampshades with gold linings some time ago. We have four pendants, and these were supposed to be a stop-gap until I found the right light fittings, but I actually like them still. This one is from Habitat.
- I already have a gold framed rectangular mirror. I don’t think you can have too many mirrors as they can be used in any room in the house. This one’s from John Lewis.
- Sultry Bay by Valspar paint was already in my stash of paint swatches to use at some point. I believe in fate obviously. This is going on the walls not covered by wallpaper.
- I’ll need to look for a few new accessories once the decorating is completed and this black vase of perfumed white roses will not only look good but smell good too. It’s from Amara.
- I’m considering getting a runner to at least cover some of the bland carpet on the middle landing. This is from Cox and Cox
- There’s obviously a lot of wall space for artwork. It will take me years to fill them all but I’m hoping to have an eclectic collection at some point. I’ve always liked the Ibride trays and I think these would look good. Available from Rockett St George.
- This is not the console table I have (I actually have two, one upstairs, one downstairs) but it’s a similar style. This is from John Lewis.
- The metal star lamp from Made.com I already have and it’s still available. It gives a lovely light when we don’t want to have the main pendants on.
