Moodboard Monday – Flowers and Heavy Metal for a Dining Room Scheme

Sometimes when a client wants to add colour and pattern to a room that already has furniture, it’s just a question of looking at what they already have and taking it from there. When the room is almost completely white  (white floor, walls, dining table and chairs – with just a hint of taupe on the chair seats), finding the right style and direction is a bit more tricky. The existing dining table and chairs  in this room are curvy and a little bit ‘Swedish Gustavian’, but the room leads onto a modern kitchen with black worktops and lots of glossy white and stainless steel. Something a bit more edgy was definitely called for to bring the two rooms together. And it most definitely needed pattern. So, this is where we’ve ended up.

The Solution

Adding metal to the room in the case of the console table, mirror and pendant light will add punches of black that will mirror the black worktops in the kitchen. Mirror not just the colour of the kitchen worktops and appliances but the hard edges too. The Cole and Son wallpaper is picking out the black again, the taupe from the seat covers, and the white from the floor. I’d love it go to on all the walls but I fear that may be a step too far for my clients. The floral pattern is bold but will also soften the scheme and add a lot of visual interest. Taupe paint is also going to be added on one of the dining room walls (if I can’t persuade them to go for paper on all the walls) and on the far wall at the end of the kitchen. This will unite the two rooms and give them a common element. The remaining walls will stay white. Accessories need to be bold, so I’ve chosen a glass bowl full of decorative orchids and a black candelabra. They can definitely have fun adding more things at a later date.
