A Stylishly Simple Sebastian Cox Kitchen by deVOL in a Rural Idyll

Sebastian Cox Kitchen by deVOL - open plan barn living

There are so many things about this kitchen that I love.

It’s situated in an open-plan barn with sweeping views of the Kent countryside for starters. Is there anything more idyllic than rural living in an old barn converted into 21st century open-plan living? The best of both worlds in my eyes. No dark pokey rooms. Communal living where family and guests converge and mingle. And all with the added advantage of soaring ceilings, lots of light and lovely rustic details. Just look at those beams and horizon encompassing windows.

And secondly, it’s a kitchen that has been designed by Sebastian Fox. Enough said. Simple and stylish and impeccably made. If you invest in a Sebastian Cox kitchen by deVOL, you know you are investing in a kitchen that will stand the test of time. Like any piece of furniture that has been lovingly crafted by hand it will never go out of fashion and you will love it even more when it has mellowed and aged over the years.

I also love the Inky Blue Black stain on some of the cabinets. It allows the texture of the rough sawn timber to show through and creates a wonderful contrast with the smooth Carrara marble and Rustic Oak worktops. It also anchors the kitchen into the open-plan space and echoes the black beams and window frames.

The marble worktops and splashback are an inspired choice. There is so much wood going on that the kitchen could have descended into a rustic pastiche of a country kitchen. Instead, the smooth and luxurious surface is a welcome and cool contrast and elevates the design to something a whole lot more sophisticated.

As do the gold taps and the gleaming stainless steel oven. Take note of the black stained ceiling too. It has the effect of delineating the cooking area. Making it much more cosy and like a room within a room.

But what I really love most of all, is the addition of so many of the clients personal accessories and mementos. Earthenware jugs, coloured baskets, ethnic rugs and country pottery. It’s so nice to see really interesting and personal treasures taking pride of place, things that are special and have meaning rather than things chosen specifically to give a certain look. It’s looks so unique and unstyled.

And I have to mention too some of the other style details that make this kitchen work. Like the whole wall of beautiful panelling seamlessly incorporating three big larders and a fridge freezer into the design, an impressive feature that keeps the room feeling easy and uncluttered. And the open feel of the island which is elegant yet very functional with deep drawers that hold a lot of stuff and is the perfect place to perch or prep the dinner. Islands with just a little space and light around them are always the best, they don’t look boxy or clumsy but more delicate and as they should look, like an island!
