It’s a sure sign that a current trend is going to stick around awhile when it starts to turn up on something as permanent as wall or floor tiles. And while I usually advise peeps to stick to neutral or classic on something that is not easily or inexpensively changed, sometimes you just have to go with your heart. And my heart is truly smitten today.
Green
Firstly, by these gloriously green tiles from the kitchen company deVOL. The Emerald Green London Tiles were originally designed for the company’s new St. John’s Square showroom in Clerkenwell, and were inspired by the traditional tiles of London tube stations and old East End pub exteriors. So no, this is not new. It’s a re-visit to something that fell out of fashion for many years and is now re-emerging thanks to the ever turning circle called fashion. They have charm, authenticity and each one is handmade, so they’re all a tiny bit different. Just as they would have been a hundred and fifty years ago.
And although the tiles have been paired with a lovely traditional kitchen, they also manage to look up-to-the- minute too, thanks to that totally unexpected pink wall. And to that unfinished plastered wall too. Paint the ceiling green, add a large sparkly chandelier (not something you would have seen in a kitchen until recently), top the island with marble, and you have a stunning kitchen that takes its inspiration from the past but is also on-trend today. Note: the tiles behind the glass fronted cabinet – a detail that extends the surface area of the tiles and makes a fitting backdrop for the pretty vintage plates.
Tropical
And secondly, by these botanical beauties from Ted Baker and the British Ceramic Tile’s brand new collection. The Paradise Tile sees birds of paradise combined with leafy palms and foliage for the ultimate tropical inspired design scheme. Each pack of nine ceramic tiles includes a random selection of designs that you can mix and match to create a unique patchwork effect on walls or floors. It could be chaotic in application but the muted colours make it discreet. You have to look closely. And the more you look, the more you see.
And even used on both walls and floors here, the effect is still calming and gives a nod to the trend without overpowering your living space. Enhanced too by the use of warm, rustic looking wood, a hint of brass and real plants.
