Book Review: Floristry Now – Flower Design and Inspiration – by Paula Pryke

I’ve been feeling the full force of the February blues for the last few days and one Instagram friend suggested I buy myself some flowers. Such a good idea! Flowers have the power to lift the spirits, to add scent and beauty to our daily lives, to connect (or re-connect) us with nature and remind us at this time of the year that spring is just around the corner.

And it just so happens that I had a copy of Floristry Now by Paula Pryke on my coffee table to lift my spirits even more.

Paula Pryke OBE, has been creating beautiful floral designs for over 30 years and is well known for her daring and innovative creations. She first opened a little florist shop in Islington in 1998 and went on to become one of London’s top florists with no less than 18 flower books published. Initially her style was embraced in Japan and America but more recently she has been working in Korea, China, India and South America too.

In this book she shares her design secrets. She explores the different influences that have shaped her work (from fine art to fashion) and gives the reader very practical advice including step-by-step projects.  The chapters explore design and how to interpret it, creating a style, colour, and different types of flowers, stems and foliage. But it’s the images that had me flicking backwards and forwards through the pages. They are stunning. I have to confess that my taste leans towards the simpler arrangements, but there will be something here for everyone.
