I was drawn to the shapes and glazes at first. The fluted edges. The pattern of intertwining flowing lines. The saturated greens and browns. And then, after digging deeper, I found out that Sthål is a Swedish company. I should have known. These ceramics have a beautifully handcrafted and slightly imperfect appearance. Solid enough to grace a country farmhouse kitchen, but pretty enough to enhance a special dinner with starched white tablecloths, silver cutlery and sparkling crystal. Can you tell I’m slightly in love?
Sthål is the creation of Susanna Theander and Helena Åkesson-Liedberg. Two Swedish creative souls with a former background in illustration, styling, design and cookbook creation. In their own words…
We were united in a love for great food, good friends and finding beauty slightly beside the mainstream.
Realising we shared the same dreams, we quit our professions as graphic designers in 2010 and presented our first ceramic collection “Arabesque” two years later. Dishwasher safe and ready for microwave or oven use, it combines inspiring design with practical convenience.
With our hands firmly in the clay, we’ve since developed and refined “Arabesque” into a complete collection of modern stoneware with the ambition to create the lasting quality of future antiques.
ABOUT THE CERAMICS
- The name Arabesque comes from French and means Arabic. It is also a special artistic expression with lingering patterns of plants, and leaves.
- All parts are made of white stoneware that burns at a very high temperature so that the ceramics become durable.
- The beautiful glazes are carefully chosen to make the food look appealing.
- The craft combined with the fact that both the clay and the glaze have their own lives, make each individual piece unique. No item is exactly the same, but the relationship is clear.
- The result is bohemian working culture for everyday or celebration. A whole dinner service if you want, each part also making itself a solitary accent to your existing tableware.
I was happy to see that prices are reasonable too. Dinner plates are £29. Large platters are £90. I might have to start a collection.
