Design tandem/brothers Creative Session put out a simple call to the global community of industrial designers: redesign the humble desk fan. The challenge listed only a few simple criteria to abide by: the form factor must be sized for the desk, includes an on/off button or switch, operates by battery or USB power, articulates, and incorporates blades to move air in a variety of directions. Designers were welcomed to use all varieties of design software to articulate their idea, ranging from a sketch, to Photoshop, to even a Google spreadsheet.
We happened upon the challenge via Elvin Chu, an industrial designer at San Francisco’s Matter, whose own minimalist bent aluminum frame and removable USB powered foam-bladed fan introduced us to the #blowingwithcs competition. Here are a handful of other designs that “blew us away”:
The #blowingwithcs is still open for submissions, with additional information here and current submissions tagged over at Instagram.
